Forestry Resources, WCI Communities
& Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Team Up To...
Build A Dream Home
"Good morning, Tate family" was the wake-up call Tom and Cynthia Tate and their
three children had been hoping for since they were forced out of their home in early
June 2006. Ty Pennington and his design crew from ABC Television's popular-show,
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came to the Tampa Bay area that early January
morning to awaken this deserving family.
Tom and Cynthia Tate are well known in their tight community of Davis Island. They
own a restaurant and are responsible for giving many of the kids in town their first
jobs, and have participated in almost every volunteer or charity event around the
island. Cynthia is heavily involved with the Boy and Girl Scouts and the PTA.
Cynthia was home alone when a plane crashed into their house in June 2006. The
pilot lost his life, along with the Tate family pets. The co-pilot was badly burned but
survived. Cynthia miraculously escaped without any injuries, but the house and
everything inside was destroyed. To make matters worse, because of the unusual
circumstances that led to the home's destruction, it was not insured and the Tates
were unable to pay off the existing mortgage, let alone rebuild their home.
That's when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition stepped in to help. In just one week,
Jan. 7-14, the show's design team and Bonita Springs-based WCI Communities,
along with its trade partners, including Forestry Resources, rebuilt the Tates home
from the ground up.
On Friday, Jan. 12, Alan Shaffer, FRI's vice president of sales & marketing, and Bruce
Green, a FRI driver, left their Fort Myers warehouse at 5:30 a.m. to meet a window
for the delivery of plant matter, mulch and planting soil to the jobsite on the island.
After off-loading the truck, Bruce and Alan were invited to tour the site while proudly
wearing their new Extreme Makeover's famous bright blue shirts. "The little island
community was jumping with big equipment traffic, and the neighborhood was
scurrying about to take in the attention given to this important construction project,"
noted Alan. "All in all, it was an ‘extremely' exciting project and we are proud to
partner with WCI to give back to the community by supporting this deserving family
by providing a premium, environmentally-sensible, all natural wood mulch and
associated products." Exclusive to WCI, the attractive appearance of the WCI Gold
Mulch is recognized throughout Florida's elite housing communities contributing to
a holistic landscape design.

Do You Know Where Your Mulch Comes From?
Follow These Guidelines And Mulch With Ease
Today, mulch can come from anywhere. Are you taking the appropriate precautions to protect yourself and your clients?
Many common landscaping mulches used around your yard can be toxic, because ome manufacturers use chemically treated wood. When this happens, arsenic residue may end up in the yard and under swing sets and playground equipment, which after prolonged exposure to chromated copper arsenate (CCA) can cause cancer in children.
CCA is a chemical preservative that protects wood from rotting due to insects and microbial agents. It is considered such a health and environmental threat that in December 2006 the Florida Department of Environmental Protection drafted a rule
prohibiting CCA-treated wood in mulch, decorative chips or any other wood product that is applied as ground cover.
The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) has already adopted standards prohibiting the use of CCA-treated wood in all consumer mulch and soil products. The certification program helps consumers identify mulches and soils that comply with industry standards.
There is one way to ensure that your mulch is coming from a responsible source - check the label. Look for the MSC-certification logo on packaging, or review the list of suppliers and retailers on the MSC Web site www.mulchandsoilcouncil.org.
Forestry Resources has been supplying the trade and homeowners with safe, clean mulches for over 20 years. In 1983, the company introduced FloriMulch, an environmentally sensible alternative to cypress mulch, and since then has been at the forefront of new product development.
Forestry Resources is dedicated to addressing the rapidly changing needs of residential and commercial properties. We are the first to have developed an end-use landscape mulching product made exclusively from melaleuca trees, a prolific and exotic invasive that destroys wetlands and natural habitat. We carry a full line of landscape products, including pruning equipment, tree-staking supplies, fertilizers, accessories and other installation and maintenance items at five Southwest Florida locations: Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Estero and Bonita Springs.
